5 Things to Consider When Choosing an eLearning Authoring Tool

A good authoring tool lets you combine text, graphics, audio, video and animation into a single course and publish it to your LMS. But the market is crowded, and the right pick depends on your team, not the feature list. Here are five questions to ask first.

  • 1. Who will build the content? A drag and drop tool suits subject experts, while a timeline based tool suits dedicated developers who want fine control.
  • 2. What kind of interactivity do you need? Simple scrolling pages, or complex branching simulations? Match the tool to the ambition.
  • 3. Is it responsive? Learners are on phones and tablets, so the content must adapt to any screen.
  • 4. Does it output the right standard? Confirm it publishes SCORM, xAPI or whatever format your LMS needs for tracking.
  • 5. What is the true cost? Look past the licence fee to templates, review workflow, hosting and the learning curve for your team.

Answer these honestly and the shortlist narrows quickly. The best tool is the one your team can use well and that fits the content you actually need to build, not the one with the longest feature list.
